What Should You Major In?

  1. You have a difficult assignment to complete. How do you get it done?
    • Look at it a completely new way. Do it backwards if you have to.
    • Take your time to mull it over. You'll figure it out if you give yourself space to think.
    • Develop a plan outlining how to do small chunks of work at a time.
    • Just put your nose to the grindstone and get it done. Nothing is too difficult for you.
    • Get a study group together, and have each person contribute their expertise.

    • Write in your journal, go for a long walk alone, or get lost in a book.
    • Develop a new recipe, web site, or other creation
    • Dabble in a million activities, but get nothing serious done
    • Find a couple friends to engage in conversation

    • Open ended assignments that allowing you a lot of independent study
    • An assignment with many pieces to analyze and draw from
    • Difficult problems that take a while to figure out
    • A few short problems that test your ability to think of new ideas
    • A big project that requires you to work with others
  4. You're trying to get into a top grad program. What's your strategy?
    • You find a few schools that are less competitive, but very cool, as backups
    • You write a killer application essay
    • You present your application in a quirky way, marketing yourself as the ideal candidate
    • You study hard for the standardized test you need to take - and try to ace it
    • You spend a lot of time working on getting great letters of recommendation
  5. In class, you are the student who:
    • Never misses a class or assignment
    • Likes to answer out loud quickly, even to rhetorical questions
    • Challenges the ideas that are being taught
